Karingal Football Club History
Early Years
The first public meeting to form a Sporting Association was held on a vacant block of land in Karingal Drive just short of Belar Ave in late November, 1963. The idea was for the Association to start various clubs to cater for the ever increasing number of young people coming into the area. The people involved with the particular activity would appoint their own committees with the Sporting Association supporting them until such a time as they could financially stand on their own feet.
Karingal Football Club was one of the first clubs formed by this Sporting Association in 1966.
The first few years were lean for the newly formed Karingal FC, which started playing in 1969. The First President was Roy Booth (He served for 9 consecutive years) ably assisted by wife Freda Booth. The First Senior Coach was Gary Clements – Gary was a quality player from Pines and went on to win the Club B&F in 1972.
A 4th 18 (Under 16s) Premiership gave the Bulls there first taste of success in 1971 with a 3 Point victory of Bon Beach, this was also followed in 1973 with 3rd 18 (Under 18s) Premiership over bitter rivals Langwarrin by 51 Points – Go Bulls! The Senior Team struggled early on until the 5th year, 1974 when a Grand Final appearance gave hope. At that time Alan Moulden was Captain Coach with Dual Best & Fairest winner Les Thomas patrolling the Centre Square & Club Legend David “Crazy” Groves roaming menacingly, he later he served as the Club’s First Premiership President in 1996.
The Early Years saw the Club Coached by Steve Charles (Whose son Daniel would later play at Karingal) and also Pines Legend Barry Moore with Barry Darts as Captain. Best & Fairest’s were won by Les Thomas, Gordon McLeod & Club Legend Mick West who also won 2 3rds Best & Fairest’s & was a League B&F winner too. David Hickman & Robert Quinn also chimed in with 3rd 18 B& F awards in this period too…
1980'S
The 1980s continued with little senior success albeit a Reserves Premiership in 1988 but there was always a belief with the younger talent at the Club we could improve by developing our home grown players. Karingal FC had a strong junior program with 5 3rd 18 Premierships between 1985 & 1991 and these home grown players formed the nucleus of the Senior Premierships sides to come…
Best & Fairest’s during this period were won by Peter Hutchison, David Hickman (1984 &1985) One of the clubs greatest Robert Vine won in 1986 & 1987 and also went on to Captain the Club. Brett Caddy, the Clubs first Senior Premiership Captain won the 1988 B&F Award. During this period Club was coached by Barry Darts & Garry Holzer with Alan Freeman, Roger Keeley & Mark West featuring prominently as Presidents. Stand Outs in the 3rd 18 B&F winners and a sign of things to come – Geoff Amoore, Darren ‘Dangles’ Findlay & Geoff “Geeks” Keogh, Brett Caddy again also featured.
Deaton Arrives
1989 saw a changing of fortune & culture with the arrival of Mick Deaton – A Mordialloc & Seaford FC Legend and someone with the leadership skills, passion & direction to improve Karingal FC forever. 1989 saw the Seniors reach the Grand Final with all 3 teams participating although the 3rds were the only winners. In 1990 the Seniors again came up short against Red Hill with the 3rds again successful. 1991 saw a changing of the guard with even more youth blooded Inc. a 16 year old Cameron McLeod who would win his 1st Senior B&F as the 3rds completed their Hat trick in 1991 – All Premierships under Super Coach & Disciplinarian Ross Pearson. 1992 saw the Seniors return to finals before Deaton retired. David Coates also during this period won 3 reserves B&Fs including a League B&F. Such was Deaton’s immense contribution to Karingal FNC that in 2000 he was named Captain of the Team of the Century (1969-1999)
Onwards to the First
Post Deaton Karingal FNC again found itself needing to play a home grown talent base to build the clubs stocks – with 3 Premierships in a row form the 3rds it looked like only a matter of time for these players to build into a First Senior Premiership. During this period in the early 90s President Chris Gawne & his committee did some outstanding work to even keep the club alive & give everyone an opportunity to play football at their local club. Brett McIlwraith took on the Bulls in 1993 and built the team up & in 1994 saw the club play finals again in all 3 grades (all bundled out at Dromana on the same day) but the hunger was there….
In 1995 Wayne Spence returned to the Club as Senior Coach – He had already coached 3rds Premierships at Karingal in 1985 & 1986 plus the Reserves of 1988 but was keen to stamp his mark on the Senior Team. Karingal had been move to the Northern Division to play against all the defunct SWGFL teams who had joined the MPNFL creating new rivalries. 1995 saw all 3 teams play finals with 3rds Runners up & the Seniors although favourites after a comfortable Second Semi win in which Mark Glenn kicked 8 goals failed to fire letting Cranbourne kick the first 7 goals. Although working hard all day, more scoring shots and much more possession the Bulls again fell short by 7 points. The one highlight of the day was the game of future star Bevan Malloy who terrorised the opposition all day in his first Senior Year. The 17 year old also took out the Senior Best & Fairest before playing quality Stingrays then VFL football…
Off Season in 1996 & 3 Massive acquisitions paved the way for the Clubs First Premiership. Jaime ‘Ox’ Thomas returned to his club via Pines & St Kilda joined by MPNFL Legend Robert Jackson. Darren Coghlan fresh from YCW Success joined as Playing assistant coaching with the necessary grunt & experience added to the Bulls team for its first Premiership tilt… After stuttering early to a 3-2 Win loss the Bulls reeled off 11 games in a row before failing at the 2nd Semi Final to fierce rival Doveton – who had lost only 1 game (to the Bulls) all year. A Preliminary Final win over Narre Warren saw the Bulls into their 2nd Grand Final in a row and 5th as a club. Not favourites but spurred on by a huge Karingal crowd, the Bulls were unwilling to make the same mistakes; Spence had the players focused & disciplined as a group. In a close game until the last quarter when the Bulls and their fans erupted to record a 37 point Victory & the Clubs first Senior Premiership sparking wild & unforgettable scenes… (See Premierships Section for more) All 3 recruits played tremendous parts plus a back line of Lamb, Sargent, Cleary & Walton held strong whilst Michael ‘Pickles’ Wright set the grandstand alight with some last quarter heroic marks & goals! Pickles, Pickles… The BULLS had arrived…Although the reserves & U18s (Again under Ross Pearson both lost their respective Grand Finals) the bulk of the next decade would be littered with these players. Daniel Watts coupled the Club’s Best & Fairest award with the League Best & Fairest in a stellar season.
Premier League Follies
So 1997 saw the club into Premier League for the first time…A new President & Senior Coach as Dale Gothard replaced David groves & Darren Coghlan replaced Wayne Spence who went on to coach the MPNFL Interleague team for the next 5 years with success. Our first game was against bitter Rivals YCW @ Jubilee Park and it was a fantastic day as we drew away in the last quarter to record an outstanding victory; Former AFL Player Ricky Norman was the Bulls new recruit and his goals got the young Bulls of to a grand start. But after winning the first 2 games only another 7 wins eventuated for the season, with 6 losses being by less than 2 goals, paying for inexperience. 1998 saw a loss of cattle & only 3 wins as the Bulls were relegated after just the 2 Seasons. The Highlight however was the Successful Under 18 Side under Doug Van Raay… The Young Bulls triumphed over Mornington by 11 Points to win the Clubs only ever Premier League Title… This was backed up by Adam ‘Bobcat’ Callahan’s League Best & Fairest in the Unders also and although down the BULLS were about to regroup.
Bouncing Back - 3 from 3
1999 was a triumphant year for the Karingal Football Club. Regrouped in the Peninsula Division against Foes Doveton, Langwarrin & Seaford the Bulls rallied under all 3 Coaches to provide the Perfect Season. The Seniors under newly appointed coach Daniel Watts wobbled early losing 2 of their first 5 including a 10 goal destruction at the hands of Mt Eliza – this inspired the Bulls which then rallied together for 16 wins to take out the Premiership. Scotty Phillips took out the Best on ground Medal but it was young upstart Michael Burke with his sublime skills that saved the day with 5 Crucial goals in blustering conditions that drove the BULLS from a losing position to a 17 Point win versus Doveton – the Bulls kicked the last 6 goals! Home grown legends like Greg Lamb, Cameron McLeod, Craig & Steve Shaw, David Measham all played key roles and only 2 Players from 21 weren’t BULLS born & bred. The Reserves were victorious under Club Legend Mark ‘ Knackers’ Behnecke defeating Seaford in a gritty contest by 11 Points; the reserves had to overcome over time in the Second Semi but with a great blend of youth & experience seeing them through. The Under 18s provided the Miracle. Coming from the 1st Semi to overcome much more fancied opposition in every game the Bulls stumped a Mt Eliza team meant to run rings around them by a mere 3 Points given them back to back Premiership…
2000's On
It wasn’t really the reception as a 20 goal drubbing at Ballam Park welcomed us thanks to a rampant Mornington team; there was work to be done. John Ruecroft, Peter Doll & Scotty Weir Smith had joined the BULLS and with advent of youth including Michael Burke, Lucas Van Raay, Sam Coates, Matt Jakobi & Andrew Osborne there was still hope and promise but only 7 wins came… 2001 was a huge year for the Club, Dean Burnell arrived fresh from Frankston VFL & with some massive recruiting the BULLS seemed to be on the right path. Daniel Charles, The George Brothers, Ricky Hayes & Steve Veenstra (B&F Winner 2001) all arrived to shoot the BULLS up the table… finishing the Home & Away on Top but 2 devastating losses in the finals to Mornington & Hastings finished a golden opportunity.. 2002 saw us rebuilding as the younger players of 1998 & 1999 began to blossom with Wayne Spence retuning to Coach. Seaford Starlet Chris Hay joined as Did ex St Kilda big Man Timmy Elliott and we were Competitive all year but a 6th placed finish reflected the loss of player from 2001…
Malloy Returns...
2003 saw the return to Karingal of Bevan Malloy, after winning 2 VFL Best & Fairest at Frankston, Malloy was appointed Senior Coach for 2 years and the Club was a buzz. After a sound start in 2003 when at ½ way we seemed destined for Finals the second half of the year we missed key opportunities losing to Pines in the penultimate game to play Finals. The reserves under Jeff Walton made finals and lasted 1 more week…Malloy won his 2 Club B& F 8 years after his first. Hay kicked 82 Goals in premier League and was at his scintillating best nearly all year …2004 Unfortunately followed along the lines the previous year when at the ½ way mark we headed the Table but faltered again to finish 5th for the 2nd year in a row. Michael Burke won his first B&F but the best individual highlight was a Karingal victory over Chelsea when at one stage trailing by over 7 goals the BULLS came back to better the Seagulls. Chris Hay kicked 5 last quarter goal to ignite the Bulls with underrated Workhorse Ben Gothard driving the Bulls in the Ruck.
The 2005 & 2006 were certainly rebuilds after players from the previous era were being replaced. 2005 was a tough year with only 4 wins… Ins included Barry Parsons Jnr & Matthaugh Vagg from Pearcedale and a young fiery type in Allan Williams. He provided the clubs great victory over Mornington in Round 1 away as the young Bulls overcome the Doggies with a Williams kick off the ground in the last 10 Seconds to provide a victory by 1 point… Lucas Van Raay won the B&F after a Stella season. 2006 with the return of Elliott, Malloy & Former Carlton Player Darren Hulme started well but the team never reached great heights even with former Hawk Doug Scott holding the back line winning 8 games including a much loved last game of the year versus Seaford at the Bulls home.. Bevan Malloy won the Club B&F plus the League cementing his spot in BULL greatness.
Peckett Arrives
2007 saw the arrival of Coach as the Club greatest ever product – Justin Peckett. 3rd year President Paul Groves secured Pecko’s signature after competing his 252 Career at the Saints… And the BULLS were a coming. Solid all year with a consistent team aided the BULLS won their 1st Senior Final defeating Edi Asp at Frankston park in their 1st Semi but alas come up short against foe YCW in a Preliminary Final, Michael Burke won his 2nd McLeod Medal but supporter favourite Doug Scott won the League B&F before relocating to Geelong… however it was the end of an era with 10 plus players finishing up or moving on from this team 7 President Paul Groves also calling it a day after 4 years.
Peckett took charge of a younger Bull team in 2008 but got instant results and much improvement from the younger group as the year progressed. Although never genuine finals contender some younger players unearthed were taking off. David Hirst won his 1st Club B&F as a 19 year old and Luke Adams fresh from his MPNFL Young Gun award were making inroads…Tragedy also struck the Bulls in 2008 when Life Member Max Greenbury daughter was murdered in her Frankston home leaving 2 children motherless. The Club grouped together and formed the Greenbury Trust with all the funds donated & raised totally over $30,000 to allow the children to have the same opportunities as others, the club came together when needed. Chris Lindley also took out his 3rd reserves B&F equally David Coates & Graham Patterson’s record.
2009 saw the Club celebrate its 40th year and returning to the Red V with white. Brendan Dunne was recruited to the Club from Frankston VFL as the BULLS looked to build on last year’s promise. 7th was a high as we got but this time we were building to something. It was also a 2nd McLeod Medal for David Hirst. Bulls Player Luke Adams who was maliciously set upon in an attack in Melbourne and missed the 2nd half of the year sustaining massive head injuries & devastating Karingal & the total football community. Support came thick & fast from close foes proving once again what a wonderful community sport football is. 2010 Saw Brendan Dunne take over the reins as Senior Coach. The BULLS unveiled possible the biggest coup ever Pre Season in that former Port Adelaide Premiership Player, B&F Winner & All Australian Brendon Lade became a Bull. Massive crowds and much improvement across the board saw the BULLS positioned nicely all year in the Top 3 but late losses relegated us to the Elimination final at Pines versus Chelsea. Outclassed & out bulked the Bulls succumbed to a worthy opponent to end what had been a promising first year under Dunne as he finished Runner Up to Michael Burke again as McLeod medallist. A Highlight during the year was a much awaited victory over YCW at Karingal. Trailing by as much as 47 points the BULLS won the game and broke a duck that had lasted 7 years (7 years too long)
The Raging Bulls
Dissatisfied with the previous Years effort saw Karingal FC work harder than ever in the off Season of 2011, President of 4 years Robyn Burke created with Sara Burke the BULLETTES, A netball club that played as part of the New Karingal Football Netball Club adding real value to the club. A Grade Toiled hard all year missing final in the last round whilst B Grade played finals , a great achievement in its infancy. Kim Stone won the League & A Grade B&F (Newly Named Robyn Burke Medal) to top off a sensational start to Netball. Football saw the first time in 44 years Karingal enter without 3rds. Seniors looked extremely strong as Bevan Malloy returned and really results showed we could mix it with the Best. A strong finish to the year saw the BULLS finish 2nd and a return date with Chelsea in the Qualifying Final loomed…A tight 1st half the Bulls came alive in the 3rd quarter thank to Dale Alanis goals and won comfortable by 31 points to set up a date with YCW in the 2nd Semi Final. Not excepted to challenge the Stonecats the BULLS surprised all coming out 15 Point Victors at Frankston Park. A late Jason Bedford Goal assured the Massive Red & White army victory and a berth in the 2011 Grand Final. After keeping neck & neck till half way thru the 2nd quarter 3 late goals followed by a Second Half onslaught saw Karingal falter to lose by 69 points…
Karingal Football Netball Club
2012 Saw Brendan Dunne & the committee recruit well to challenge again with our depth being much improved. The Seniors finished 2nd with a 15-3 Record but the definite fire power to go all the way. The Qualifying Final V Mt Eliza started poorly as we let the Mounties out to an 8 goal lead. Pegging back all day the Bulls had a chance to hit the font in the final minute but came up short. After defeating Bon Beach in a fiery 1st Semi then Bulls found themselves in the Prelim V YCW who had been upstaged by the Mounties in the 2nd Semi. One again a slow start say the Stonecats lead early by 3 goals – Basically the final Margin & a big disppaointment to all involved. The Reserves had a Sensational Hone & Away Season under Coach David Measham finishing on top but unable to bring the Intensity required to either finals games. 3rds Returned under former player Michael Triep in the Colts Competition & narrowly missed Finals – Highlight being Grant Paxton winning the League B & F in a stellar season.
Netball in 2012 saw 2 Teams qualify for Finals with B & C Grade making the grade. A Grade just missed also. B grade went on a fantastic run to the Prelim Final before succumbing to Seaford. Anna Whitaker took out the League C Grade B& F after a fantastic season.
2013 Saw all Karingal FNC teams struggle to keep pace with the previous high standards. Brendan Dunne led the club in his 4th year as coach as the Seniors inconsistency cost it a final spot that was available right up to the last game. The Reserves battled after a strong 2012 whilst the U/18s we reintroduced into the Peninsula Division and won 4 ½ games in a credible return. Netball wise A Grade finished 6th with 7 Wins whilst B Grade 8th with 4 wins for the season. C Grade had a sensational season finishing 3rd with 13 & ½ wins for the Season & setting up a 1st Semi Final v YCW. The Bullettes overcame YCW by 1 goal in an epic clash. They followed this with another amazing victory by 1 goal against Pines in the Prelim Final to progress to our 1st ever Netball Grand Final Appearance. The fairy tale didn’t continue playing against a ruthless Edithvale Aspendale losing 46-18 with our luck running out.
2014 saw Karingal FNC Appoint former Noble Park champion Steve Coats as Senior Coach. There was a big change in the personnel. The BULLS battled from the get go & midway thru the season Coats step aside allowing Club Legend Michael Burke to take the reins. The Seniors won their only game for the Season under Burke with a well-deserved & emotional victory overcoming Chelsea @ Ballam Park. The reserves battled all year under Troy Callahan whilst the U18s under Michael Triep in his 3rd year set the club alight. From Season start the Young Bulls played with both flair & vigour & finished 5th with a 11-7 Record – The Best for 13 years – qualifying for finals. The Elimination Final saw the Young Bulls overcome Seaford by 7 points holding on valiantly to a big lead. The 1st Semi Final saw the RUN continue with a stirring 2 point Victory over Edithvale Aspendale with Travis Puntaroni leading from the front with 4 goals. A Prelim Date with Mornington saw the Bulls outmuscled but exciting progress had been made.
2014 Netball saw the girls toil manfully under new coach Kerrie Connolly. Outsized & bussed for most of the year the real highlight was Amy Cunliffe who was awarded the MVP for A Grade.
2015 was a difficult season for the Senior Bulls under Club Legend Michael Burke failing to register a win although close & competitive many times whilst the Reserves under Andrew Osborne won the singular game leaving the under 19s under Mike Triep as the clubs shining light.. Progressing on beautifully from a 3rd place in 2014 the young Bulls developed nicely with 15 playing Senior Football & 2 fantastic finals win setting them up V the Mt Eliza Redlegs in a Grand Final but alas it wasn’t to be going down to a strong outfit by 47 points. Individual Highlights inc. Blake Simpson winning the U19 League Best & Fairest whilst Brad Occhipinti took out the U19 League Goalkicking award.
Netball 2015 took on an aggressive & proactive approach under New President Renae Saunders & Coach Ben Black – both determined to turn the Bullettes into a force! Come the Season’s end the Bullettes would own the PFNL Netball Club Championship with all 4 sides competing in Grand Finals. B Grade came home with the title [Pictured below] with Renee Brewster as MVP & Brooke Campbell Runner up in the League B & F whilst A Graders Sam Gooden, Emily Bennet [4th in League B&F] & Star Recruit Steph Puopolo all made the Team of the Year whilst Sara Burke took our C Grade League Best & Fairest – The bar has been set!
Netball again led the way in 2016 with D, C and A grade teams all making the Grand Final, sadly all 3 teams were beaten on the day. Payton Rowe won the C Grade League Best & Fairest medal with a host of other high polling vote getters amongst both football and netball ranks. It was a hard year, but on eof improvement for the senior football team under Mike Triep but the U19s played finals and we continued to bring young players through the ranks. 2016 also saw the announcement of funding for a new multi-million dollar facility for the Bulls which meant we said goodbye to the clubrooms that we’ve called home for over 40 years
Women's Football at the Bulls
Troy Callahan took over as President in 2017 with a difficult year of not having a home base ahead. Footy was a challenging year, while competitive in most games the seniors only won 2 for the year with reserves also struggling. The Under 19s had their opportunities but missed finals by a game. This year saw the introduction of Women’s Football at the Bulls. Tristan McDougal coached the inaugural team after Ben Black had done the recruiting and pre-season, stepping away for work. Playing a 14 round season in a very competitive 16 team division on South Eastern Women’s Football league our ladies had a great first year finishing on 8 wins for the year. Inaugural captain was Minta Franks with Caitlin Kimpton-Forde then Brooke Campbell assisting, the Best & Fairest was a tie between Brooke Campbell and Ebony Newman.
Another strong year in netball, now with Jade Cahill taking the reins with A, B & C Grades all playing in the Grand Finals. Unfortunately only B Grade was successful, winning their 2nd premiership in 3 years. Bridgette Barry-Murphy won the B Grade league Best & Fairest. Among an injection of young recruits with VFL experience and home grown players Michael Burke continued to defy age and played his 300th game, was named Captain of the Peninsula Team of the Year and won his 7th McLeod Medal.

Jumper History
The Original jumper worn by the Junior Club was all Red with a White K in the left corner. The Senior Club started with a White Jumper & Red Vee – this lasted until 1995 when the club entered the Northern Division of the MPNFL and changed to A Red Bulk with Red & White Vertical Stripes below… In 2000 upon Entry to the Premier League of the MPNFL the Club added the then BULLS logo to the Jumper. 2009 was the 40th year and to celebrate this we returned to the Original Senior Club Jumper with new & fiercer BULL & have retained this since.

1st Game Each Season (Also known as the RSL Cup played on the Anzac Day) named after 2 players – Daniel Watts (KFNC) & Mark Berenger (Frankston YCW) who best represent to each club the same characteristics of the ANZAC – That is, for reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, comradeship, and endurance that will never own defeat

Long Island CC - Helen Van Raay Cup
A 20/20 Match to celebrate & honour a lady who made a significant Contribution to both Karingal FNC & Long Island Cricket Club. Helen was a passionate supporter of her sons Doug, Pat & Lucas and together with husband Theo were heavily involved in the development, drive & success of each club. Helen was a life member of Long Island CC – an amazing contributor, canteen manager & beloved figure plus supporter of all. Helen was a life member of the Frankston East JFC (now Karingal Bulls JFC) a tireless worker & supporter of the Karingal FNC also right up to her tragic passing in 2010.

Frankie was first spotted by St Kilda at Karingal when just 16 years old. Winning the Under 19 B&F in 1990 but in November 1991 he was de-listed prior to the draft. He was selected as pick No.49 in 1991 but played just one game of five minutes and ran second in the reserves best and fairest in 1992. When shifted to defense he showed he could be a running back pocket who could set up plays and the wide spaces of Waverley suited his game.
He came second in the best and fairest in 1994 then second in the club’s more successful 1997. Frankie kept ticking over in 2002 his strong year saw him occupy 10th place in the best and fairest count. He was used as a burst player off the bench in 2003 and did well until an ankle injury caused a brief hiccup late in the year. At the start of 2004 he played five games before being lowered to the reserves until late in the year He came back to play two finals and was a worthwhile contributor. Although expected to retire he decided to continue and in the end gave another two years of good service as primarily a running pinch-hitter coming off the bench. He Retired from AFL in 2006 to Playing Coach Karingal FC in 2007 until 2009 & played until 2013 at Karingal FNC amassing a further 100 Senior Games #Legend

Team of the Century
In 2000 a Select panel at Karingal FC saw fit to choose its best team from Season 1969 until 1999. The Criteria was to have played a minimum of 30 Senior Games. The Team of the Century included Wayne Spence as Coach with Mick Deaton as Captain & Daniel Watts as Vice-Captain. A Gala Nite was held at the Frankston Cultural Centre to celebrate the event with over 400 people in attendance and most former champions attending. 2 Father Son Combinations made the team also – David & Paul Groves plus Gordon & Cameron McLeod.
